Chapter 12

In this chapter, Maniac went to Amanda Beale's house to help fix her book, where he met all of Amanda's family. He went and wrestled with Hester, Amanda's 4 year old sister, Lester, Amanda's 3 year old brother, and Amanda's dog named Bow Wow. He stayed for dinner and got to know Amanda's family. After he fixed Amanda's book, he watched TV with Hester and Lester, then read "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" to the family.

Eventually, Maniac was going home, via Mr.Beale's car. Maniac directed Mr.Beale's car to East End, which was a town full of Black people. Mr.Beale explained that East End was East End and West End was West End, and that White people do not go to East End. Maniac then explained to Mr.Beale that he didn't have a home, unless he counted the Deer Pen at the Zoo.

Mr. Beale then pulled a U-Turn and headed to his house with Maniac still inside his car. Mr. and Mrs.Beale let Maniac stay at their house. Maniac then went to sleep in Amanda's bed and Amanda was moved to Hester and Lester's room. Before Maniac went to sleep, he went outside the Beale's house and looked at the address, 278 Sycamore Street. Maniac was happy to finally have an address.

Chapter 22

In this chapter, a baby buffalo wakes up to find a strange creature inside the buffalo pen. He is described as a boy with fur only on the top of his head, sitting on a pile of hay eating a carrot. The baby buffalo gets used to it, then expects it after days, but one night he wakes up to find the boy hopping the fence, but falling, hitting his head and going limp. An old man then comes and takes the boy to the 'band shell' which is the back of a storage room for baseball.

The old man set up a makeshift bed out of sports equiptment. The boy then stirs and asks the old man who he was. The old man said he was Grayson. They had a breif conversation and the old man gave the boy some food. The boy explained that he lived in the buffalo pen and that his name was Jeffery Magee. The chapter then ends with the old man and the boy going to get krimpets.

Chapter 33

This chapter explains that Maniac ran in the cold month of January and only ate to keep from tarving, warmed his body only enough to keep it from freezing to death, and only ran because there was no reason to stop. He returned to the band shell only to pick up a blanket, some non perishable food, a glove, and as many books as he could fit into the Grayson's old black sachel.

During the days, he ran a slow jog. But sometimes he sprinted for ten to twenty seconds, trying to leave "himself" behind in the town. He kept going forward on railroad tracks, alleys, roads and golf courses. By nightfall he was back in Two Mills. He revisited the buffalo pen to sleep sometimes, and also slept in stairwells, abondoned cars, and an empty garage. He did odd jobs for housekeepers and other people, though he never begged.

One day, he came to the Valley Forge and set himself up in one of the Army cabin replicas with his satchel. The floor was dirt, so he wrapped himself in a blanket cocoon. He had many dreams containing memories and nightmares. He stayed there for 2 nights, and figured he would die soon, so he slowly waited for death.
